Music and lyrics are the words or verbiage and
tunes that gives a song meaning. Without music & lyrics, songs
would be only a blank piece of paper and where's the fun in that?
Musical lyrics give meaning, insight and evoke emotion in ways
not possible with instrumentals alone.
Lyricists make their livings on writing appropriate lyrics to
popular songs. Who can forget "The Rose", which Bette
Midler made famous? But, Bette didn't write the song. The lyrics
were written by Amanda McBroom, whom is a Los Angeles singer and
songwriter.
Most star performers and vocalists don't write their own songs.
Most lyrics are written by professional songwriters, sometimes
alone and sometimes teaming up with others who can put a melody
to the engaging words. Still there are a few performers who write
their own individual lyrics in a style all their own.
Probably no other artist within the last 10 years have received
so much attention for his lyrics as rap star Eminem. A prolific
writer this Slim Shady is and even so, inner city kids have all
along been putting the rapper's lyrics under a microscope to ferret
out every nuance of insight the verbiage provided.
Unlike many other artists who create timeless songs, it's hard
to imagine any other artist singing or rapping the music and lyrics
of Eminem. When Pink Floyd came out with "The Wall"
concept album, it was the same deal. What lounge singer, wedding
vocalist or county fair crooner would possibly sing any of lyrics
from The Wall?
Just as some lyricists write lyrics to be timeless
and not specific to any singer, many recording artists write lyrics
in their own styles so nobody but them will ever be associated
with the words. This is all a part of ownership.
Some believe that to sing a song, you've got to
own it. Writing one's own music and lyrics provides this opportunity
like no other. But, not only professionals have the exclusive
rights to write lyrics.
You can, too. Just put pen to paper and see where
the muse leads you. You may be amused by where the lyrics lead
