There is an interesting article in USA Today about an elementary school teacher who helps kids learn lyrics. Because it’s an election year, the teacher Linda White is educating kids through lyrics about suffrage and voting.

In fact, she composed the suffrage songs herself, so there’s no confusion about where or not she is indeed teaching the kids the words to “Suffragette City” by David Bowie. But, the Falls Church, Virginia teacher goes far beyond election year antics and actually teaches children through opera, musicals and other ensemble performances.

The lyrics that White teaches are grade specific and help the kids with their current academic curriculums. Even parents three decades after attending class with White can still remember the words to some of her musicals.

So, it’s easy to see that this is no wham bam thank you ma’am approach to education, but rather learning that will last a lifetime. And, that’s quite poetic now, isn’t it?

According to the Forbes 20 Under 25 list of top earning young superstars, Avril Lavigne and Carrie Underwood were two of the 20, who are under 25-years-old to make the list. Yes, the list was littered with Hollywood actors and sports superstars, but Lavigne and Underwood were no underdogs as they both pulled in respectable figures.

According to the report, Avril Lavigne scored $12 million this year, largely due to her megahit “Girlfriend” that was recorded in eight different languages. Besides putting Perez Hilton in his place, this was the best damn thing to happen to Avril this year.

Carrie Underwood, on the other hand, pulled down a cool $7 million mostly due to the staying power of Some Hearts that she put out a couple of years ago. Of course, getting the Grammy nod earlier this year and getting nominated for another Grammy just last week didn’t hurt with sales, either.

There is no doubt it pays well to be a pop or country star. And, as long as Avril and Carrie keep cranking out the music and lyrics we love to hear, this pop royalty will be rolling in royalties for many years to come.

You can’t stop hip-hop is the message being spoken by rappers on Capitol Hill. In a House Committee hearing reminiscent of the days of Elvis Presley and the Beatles, rapper David Banner is defiant about cleaning up the lyrics in rap music.

Apparently, Banner thinks the government should clean up the neighborhoods where drugs and prostitution is rampant rather than cleaning up the language putting a light on those neighborhoods. Whether or not the crude language is spoken or written, the problems in the hood will still exist.

The committee meeting is about censorship versus free expression of ideas. Some are calling it an “Imus and Andy” reaction while to others this is simply a business and marketing issue. What is clear though is that since the social problem is too big to tackle by the government, they are trying to tackle the language problem instead.

Wrapping up rap lyrics in bubblegum wrap is no solution. though. Hip-hop must not be stopped, crude or not, that’s all we got, to tell the truth, however loose about the bad and the good in the hood. Understood?

McDonald’s Corporation has caused a tornado of controversy by dropping rapper Twista from a 10-city concert tour because of what they are calling “derogatory lyrics”. The fast food giant has decided to drop the potty mouth rapper because of explicit language and references to drugs in the lyrics.

Twista is known for his hits “Slow Jamz” and “Overnight Celebrity” with Jamie Foxx. McDonald’s has stated that they are all for freedom of speech and artistic expression but that they don’t endorse explicit and derogatory language.

Twista is blaming Don Imus and the flap he has created within the hip-hop industry for McDonald’s whirlwind decision.

Many Internet radio stations are observing a day of silence in protest over higher rates that the Copyright Royalty Board has imposed. Smaller Internet radio stations are most affected with some paying as much as 300-percent more.

So, instead of singing the lyrics to your favorite songs today while at your computer, simply hum in protest over the Day the Music Died in Internet Radio.

One of my favorites was the misheard lyrics of an ACDC song “dirty deeds done with sheep”, which conjures up all sorts of images that we can’t print here. The article is a good read and will bring a smile to the faces of anyone into music lyrics.

An article in The Columbian online newspaper out of Vancouver, Washington tells the tale of a teacher who used to be a lyric writer who uses some of his old lyrics to teach high school kids about writing. Apparently, teacher Randy Cate used to write lyrics for Ted Nugent, Dionne Warwick and others.

Mr. Cate uses some of the different versions of his old lyrics to teach the kids about how to rewrite songs while playing a music video of Ted Nugent. This sounds like it could be the sequel to Jack Black’s “School of Rock” and, unlike the original, Mr. Cate will get to keep his job.

Last week I had blogged about how Bob Dylan was overlooked with his 2 Grammy wins as the new kids in the industry received all the hype. Now, on President’s Day I would like to talk about another old timer who also received 2 Grammy’s and was overlooked as well.

One of the greatest lyricists of our time who was both born in the U.S.A. and born to run, Bruce Springsteen received Grammy’s for Best Long Form Music Video: “Wings for Wheels” and Best Traditional Folk Album: “We Shall Overcome – the Seeger Sessions”.

Springsteen may have lost a little spring in his step over the years, but he can still rock out and write lyrics like no one else in the industry. I realize that Boss’s Day is usually in October, but while we’re celebrating old timers like George and Abe, I think we should also give a big salute to Bruce as well.

A story in the Gothamist talks about how a songwriter may have killed his girlfriend and left a trail of lyrics implicating him in the dastardly deed. According to the Gothamist, the personal trainer, who was also the lead singer in a group called Monolith, gave 50 pages of lyrics to prosecutors with violent and sexual themes to be used against him.

To be fair to the accused, though, when are hard rock lyrics these days not about sex and violence? So the moral of this tale boys and girls is that if you’re accused of a crime, hide your lyrics. Whether you’re guilty or innocent, they may be used against you in a court of law. And, that would itself inspire a very sad song indeed.

The George Harrison handwritten lyrics to “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” from the Beatles White Album will go on sale in the U. S. on Monday. Apparently, the handwritten lyrics are expected to fetch in the neighborhood of $780,000.

At the bottom of the page are the words, “The band leader said he ain’t playin”, which most likely refers to Paul McCartney’s desire to leave the band at the time.

As memorabilia goes, you gotta love the Beatles staying power. The band broke up in 1970 and now 37 years later, a handwritten page of lyrics are fetching more than the William Shakespeare Second Folio published in 1632, which garnered only a measly 100,000 grand recently. It’s a sign of the time when the Bard’s not getting as much love as a Beatle.
